True Terror: The Hollywood Tower Hotel Jun10 '03

The Tower of Terror climbs ominously into the skies of the Walt Disney World Resort, the tallest structure on property. Nearly 13 stories tall, the ride drops its occupants for a free-fall that lasts 1.75 seconds – during which the riders go from 0–35 mph in 1.0 second. In fact, the ride vehicle is not just released for its fall... to heighten the sensation, the vehicle is actually "pulled down" for a brief period.

For some reason, when I was younger, I found myself on this ride, and many others. But on my recent visit, in early May of this year, I not only skipped the rides, I practically avoided all eye contact.

Sure, I did walk by "The Tower of Terror" and I did stand near the top of "Summit Plummit," overlooking all of Disney World, but did I make any effort to go down (literally!) either of these attractions?

I thought about it, sure. Yep. I thought about it for approximately the amount of time it takes to drop from either of these rides, which from the quote above, is estimated at about 1.75 seconds.

You can guess what I did then. It’s not to say I regret it avoiding the rides. I just realize that both rides are over before they start. Or maybe I was just plain chicken. You be the judge...
