Early 90’s music Jun19 '04
I’ve been really getting into music from the early 90’s. Well... I suppose I should say, "getting back into..." I mean, the early 90’s really wasn’t that long ago, so most of the songs are still pretty fresh. However, a lot of them are so shocking to hear, they literally make you laugh out loud.
At my current job, we have XM Satellite Radio, and one of the stations is for 90’s music only. So all day, we sit back and bop our heads to all the "oldies" – that is, the oldies in our lifetime. Also, iTunes has some great mix CDs of early 90’s music, that I’ve been downloading.
Some of the songs I’ve heard really make me wonder how anyone ever found a liking to them. They all just seem so "pure."
A lot of people said that the passing of Ronald Reagan attracted so many mourners because it reminded America of how simple the world was, back when Reagan was president. Well, in the same way, when I hear certain early 90’s music, I instantly think of how simple things were, and how simple the songs were. In retrospect, it may be just because my life was simpler back then. After all, I was only 10 or 11 years old when a lot of these songs hit the airwaves:
- Joyride – Roxette
- The Sign – Ace of Base
- Move This – Technotronic
- Whatta Man – Salt–N–Pepa
- On Bended Knee – Boyz II Men
- Stay (I Missed You) – Lisa Loeb
- The Motown Song – Rod Stewart
- I Will Remember You – Amy Grant
- Friday I’m In Love – The Cure
- Life is a Highway – Tom Cochrane
I’m sure a lot of these songs bring back memories for others too. There are obviously many more that are great, but I can’t name them all...
Keep in mind, I am referring to that time period right after the 80’s, but before grunge. I believe grunge hit in about late ‘92. And at that point, things changed forever. Bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Radiohead, and many more contributed to the "grunge kick–off." This wasn’t a bad thing – no, certainly not. In fact, to this day, the bands that are still together are making solid music (and some, like Radiohead, are the biggest bands in the world). Of course, a lot of "grunge era" bands didn’t make it this far, but many have.
And somewhere in there, the Red Hot Chili Peppers took rock–and–roll, and combined it with punk. The combination was brilliant for the time, but surprisingly, the Chili Peppers seemed to fade out of that "punk stage" rather quickly. And, in my opinion, that was a good thing. Their music today is still full of energy and symbolism, but has taken a much more mellow tone than their songs from yesterday. I believe they are very talented musicians.
The 90’s brought some good music, despite the rapidly changing musical scene. Some would say the 90’s was the worst decade ever, for music. I suppose it all depends on how many decades you’ve lived through – in order to hear the music from that time.
At 2004, how far have we come? In ten years, what will the first decade of this century have brought us? What songs will we here on XM Radio, and considered "oldies?" We shall see...
