Blogging to pay rent Jul21 '04
Writing for me
By no means do I consider this site to be "important" or "full of indispensable resources," and I have no intentions for it to be. I use this site as an outlet for my creative and technical energy, and most of the entries I make can be considered "thoughts to myself," meaning I tend to write for my own good, rather than writing things that I think readers will take enjoyment to.
Sure, there are many entries that are direct questions or theories, in which I hope someone will find and respond to, but I never expect answers. I hope they come – but if not, I am no less of a "blogger," and I have lost no inspiration.
Resourceful blogs
Many sites that call themselves "blogs" are really more than that. Some sites build their foundation on feedback and user interaction. And rightfully so, those sites deserve the attention, simply because they provide useful and valuable information, which is updated frequently, and always considered "fresh."
I’m sure you can think of many sites that change often, and always have something "new to say." These sites can be personal, instructional, educational, or newsworthy. In fact, the "genre" that the site falls into doesn’t matter. All that matters is that many readers have an interest in what’s being said, and visit the site often, due to it’s resourceful nature.
Blogging makes cents
Many of these "frequently visited sites" can make money, without even selling a product! In a sense, if their fan base is large, and if they are full of endless information or ideas, making money from "blogging" is not only a reality, it’s expected!
How do "bloggers" make money?
"Bloggers" can make money by advertising on their sites. That much is obvious. But it’s interesting to note the trend that is developing:
Joe Blog decides to start a web log about car tires. Joe Blog realizes that there are many internet users that enjoy this topic, and he receives over 1,000 hits per day.
In this case, there is an opportunity for advertisers to reach a market that is hard to reach anywhere else.
I won’t go into current marketing and advertising trends (of which I don’t know much about) – but, these days, it is hard to reach people through traditional advertising media. And the reason for that is many people rely on web logs and informational sites for all their news and entertainment.
Joe Blog realizes that putting ads on his site could damage the purity of it, but the monetary rewards silence his resolute perceptions. By presenting the right organization with proof of how many visitors go to his site per day, Joe Blog now writes for himself, and for cash.
So, truthfully, all you need really need is an idea and an internet connection, and you too can generate some extra cash.
The end product
As I mentioned earlier, "bloggers" can make money without even selling a product. This is because they are providing a service. This service is the value of their content – their ability to put their own ideas or facts onto paper, and share them with the world.
And since many people appreciate the efforts of "bloggers" to share their knowledge, that results in more and more visits, which creates more exposure for the properly placed advertisements.
