An iTunes negative Aug18 '04

Apple’s iTunes has been praised constantly for it’s "ease of use" and simplicity. With thousands of albums just a "mouse click" away – what’s there NOT to like?

iTunes, like any other online music service, has strict distribution and sharing policies. For example, in iTunes, you can only listen to your songs on three computers. You have to "authorize" each computer to listen to each song or album.

And this is fine. How many people are going to listen to their songs on more than three computers, anyway? It’s not likely that most people would.

The problem is... by using an external hard drive to store all of my music, I have to be connected to the internet, just to "authorize" albums that I listen to on my girlfriend’s laptop, for instance. Well... the problem is... sometimes I’m not near an internet connection.

So this morning, I wanted to hear some specific albums on my girlfriend’s laptop. I fired up my external hard drive, and waited for iTunes to load up. I then tried to play some music, and this error popped up:

iTunes error message

So, as I said, you have to be connected to the internet, just to authorize your purchased music. And if you have no internet connection, you have no music!

Seems aggravating, at least.
