Merging onto America’s highways Aug27 '04

I’ve never been a big fan of driving. It is extremely stressful, bumpy, and uneasy. It is no fun.

However, I’ve realized that the reason I don’t like driving is because city (or congested suburb) driving is just constant "stop and go." There is no freedom to actually "drive."

But... on expressways, there IS that freedom. Provided you are not driving at rush hour, on a congested expressway – driving can sometimes be a smooth treat. It can also be very relaxing.

Turnpike views

Earlier this morning, I was heading north on 294. At one point, I went through a section that was very curved and hilly, and I thought the journey was quite interesting.

It was just a small section of road. It was actually a "bridge" type section, which merges onto another main highway. But, in any case, it got me thinking.

I wonder how many more spectacular views/roads there are like that – across the country.

I would like to call these particular sections "curves." I wonder how many other curves exist that are exceptionally fun to drive.

I would like to travel around the country, and make note of the great curves, and make a giant book, which would be titled:

Best Curves in the CountryMerging onto America’s highways.

To meet criteria for my book, the segment of highway must be a certain length; it must contain some decent scenery, (or that "odd–angled view of a building" that can be captured no where else); and it must have some degree of "breathlessness," if that’s a word. What I mean is... It must take your breath away, if only for a split–second.

I think it would be an amazing book, and illustrate how these amazing turnpikes have changed the way we live and work.
