Self–publishing vs. Life Feb22 '05

I overheard at SimpleBits that Jason Kottke is quitting his full time job to blog.

I guess Jason is torn between self–publishing, and working full–time – at the same time.

This is very interesting, because it exposes a phenomenon (blogging) that has yet to be taken seriously, in most realms. In fact, it’s very hard for bloggers themselves to adapt to a sense of "real–ness" in their work.

Blogging IS work. Blogging has deadlines. Blogging IS stressful.

But... blogging is extremely enjoyable and resourceful. It CAN be a profession, and I strongly back Jason in what he is doing.

That’s not to say I would do it myself (yet), but I don’t disagree with his decision.

The important thing to consider is that he has solid goals laid out, and a reasonable sense of reality (in the fact that he recognizes that it may not work out).

There’s web, and there’s life

I realize the desires of wanting to self–publish interfere with regular life activities. I’ve been down that road, and I am living it now.

There are no simple answers. Self–publishing (and internet development, in general) has become a part of who I am, and leaving it out would be like not living life to the fullest.

It’s another world (away from the physical) where I can use my mind to the fullest. There are no geographical limitations; no guess who you might learn from next. The web is a giant network of people and interests. Sometimes it’s too much for me to handle.
