I'm not sure I'm entirely following... But I'll try.
The "generalities" you mention (it came from x, y, z, and it was around 2 MB) - Gmail's advanced search lets you search through WHO sent it, and if it has an attachment. Shouldn't that narrow it down enough?
I am thinking you are referring to a different meaning of the word "sort."
By "sort," I meant *manually sorting your mail,* such as putting it into different folders, etc.
The "sort" you are talking about, perhaps is in regards to clicking a column header, and having the page SORT the results from either A-Z, or Z-A.
Is that what you meant?
Thanks for the thoughts...

A useful feature for GMail (not sure if it exists) would be to sort the inbox by size.
If you are running out of space for example, this is an efficient way to clean things up.
Searching seems to handle most other areas well, but I can't figure out how to perform the above.

I have found the lack of a sorting capability a serious defect in gmail. "Search" does not adequately replace sort if you don't have exactly the right word or name. There is no reason that there cannot be both "search" and "sort"; other email programs have both.

I want to see and analyze all my emails grouped by who sent them, without having to type each sender's name into the search box and then only see that one group.

Search capabilities, in any application or utility, are far better than sorting could ever do.

I disagree entirely and will provide an example where Gmail search falls short. AFTER you have searched on the one/two words that you can recall from this elusive message and your search returns tens, maybe hundreds of results; how do you then narrow from there with little/no further information? The SORT would allow you to do so. We don't know what to search sometimes but we know generalities (e.g. I know it might have come from x, y, or z and it was around 2MB... Gmail would have you search this out and then give you a chronological list to find your way through). Not acceptable. Just my 2cents.
