RSS image element dimensions Jul15 '05
My RSS feeds for this site are hand-coded, meaning I don’t rely on blogging software to generate them.
This is great because I can understand how RSS feeds are used, and how to create and manipulate them.
I typically use the allowed <image> element in my RSS feeds, because it allows for a bit of brand awareness for my feeds, which is extremely important, since RSS feeds are read away from the actual site design (or brand).

Notice the small image in the upper right corner.
From what I’ve read, the enclosed image element should be at the dimensions of 88x31. I assumed this was the maximum size the image could be.
Well, with the arrival of podcasts, I’ve noticed many podcast feeds with rather large images included:

So I went back to the spec, and checked to see if there is, indeed, a limit to the dimensions of the image included with the RSS feed.
Sure enough, there is a limit, but it’s not 88x31. That’s only the default size. It can be bigger than that. The maximum width is 144 pixels, and the maximum for height is 400 pixels. How they came up with those numbers, I don’t know.
But it allows me to create a much bigger image, which is included with my RSS feed. More image size means more room for the brand.
