I don’t understand Digg Feb27 '06
I don’t understand Digg.
I’ve been spending some time at the site, over the past couple of weeks, to "get acquanited" with it all, and become familiar with how it all works.
Maybe I am just a "newbie," and I need to spend more time with it. If so, please forgive my ignorant comments.
What I like/understand:
I like being able to see what sites/links people are talking about, and be able to submit my own sites/links, and comment on anything.
I also like being able to subscribe to RSS feeds, as the result of a search. So, for example, I’ve subscribed to an RSS feed for the search "Netflix," so I’ll be notified when anyone submits a "Digg" with the word "Netflix" in the title or body.
What I don’t understand:
Anything with a URL can be "dugg?" Doesn’t this seem a bit too "open ended?" Some people reference the most pointless things - and sure, they have every right to reference "whatever they feel" - but referencing the "front page of a web site," because you like the design, seems like it doesn’t have much context associated with it.
In other words, when someone "diggs" an article or helpful resource (service/business, etc) - this provides a context, of which people can really "tap into."
I guess what I’m saying is: a link (URL) does not equate to value or meaning. It just points to something. So, people are "digging" any link they desire, which often points to nothing meaningful.
To me, Digg seems like a more advanced del.icio.us.
Also, to "change gears" - if you notice an interesting site or blog post, why not provide feedback there, instead of referencing/commenting at Digg? It’s almost like an external, "water cooler" discussion of some distant URL or resource. In other words, you’re indirectly acknowledging another resource. Why not just visit that resource, leave feedback there, and be done with it?
Again, perhaps I just haven’t spent enough time at the site, to "fully absorb" the real meaning. And I’m going to keep using the site. This is just a small "time out."
