Dreamhost file snapshots Oct29 '06

Yesterday I came across an unfortunate problem where I lost some text on a web page. The original text was in Greek, and for some reason, when I viewed that HTML page in a text editor, the Greek converted itself to something unreadable. Without realizing it, I had re-saved over the current version, with the unreadable text intact.

How was I to restore this page, without having to re-generate it with copy/paste methods? (Because I certainly couldn't re-type in Greek.)

The answer was, thankfully, a quick one - thanks to Dreamhost's automatic file backups.

Within an FTP editor, you can "snapshot" to older versions of your folders and files. I've discussed this before, but with fewer details on how it works.

While in your FTP editor, navigate to a folder called .snapshot, which you'll have to do with a command, because the folder is not plainly visible.

Here are a few screenshots using Transmit, for Mac OS X:

You'll then see six folders with labels for hourly, nightly, and weekly:

Go into any of those folders to retrieve backup files and folders for any of your domains.

To understand how these folders are labeled, you can read the Dreamhost Wiki on this topic, but it's pretty simple to understand:

hourly.0 is one hour ago, hourly.1 is two hours ago, nightly.0 is one day ago, nightly.1 is two days ago, weekly.0 is one week ago, weekly.1 is two weeks ago
