Gmail keyboard shortcuts that I need to use more Nov17 '06
I use Gmail every day of my life, and I love keyboard shortcuts. That's why it comes as a great surprise to me that I have been needlessly using the mouse (and causing more strain on my wrist) when I could have been using keyboard shortcuts for various things.
Hey - you learn something new every day.
I already mentioned some favorite keyboard shortcuts. Here are some more that I need to use more often. Below each one, I've included what I wish it would be.
- While in view mode (where it lists emails one on top of each other, such as the Inbox), you can quickly select a message by hitting J or K, which moves the "selection arrow" up or down in the list. Once you are at an email that you want to "open," just hit O.
What I wish it would be: I wish you could just use the arrow keys to go up or down, rather than the unintuitive J and K.
And then, of course, G then I gets you back to your Inbox.
You can also hit X while on a message, and it will "check" the message. This is useful for when you select a message, and the archive it. To archive that message from the Inbox, just hit Y.
What I wish it would be: Typically I select a message, and then immediately delete it. There doesn't seem to be a shortcut for delete, just archive.
Also, I'd like to be able to Shift select messages, using the keyboard shortcut. For example, if you check one message, then hold Shift, and select another, it automatically selects all messages in between. However, this won't work using the X key. It only works if you use the mouse.
- If you want to force a refresh, hit U.
What I'd also like
I'd also like a keyboard shortcut which selects all Unread messages, in whatever view you're in. Typically I select all Unread, and then Delete.
