Screen Mimic - Mac OS X screen recording Jan18 '07

I recently purchased Snapz Pro X - a very nice utility for screen captures: images and movies. It took me a while to respect the $70 price tag, though.

Today I discovered Screen Mimic from Daring Fireball.

Immediately standing out is the ability to export as Flash (SWF or FLV). This is helpful for sharing screencasts over the web.

Snapz Pro X only exports as Quicktime.

Despite this feature, I still don't understand why Screen Mimic is priced nearly the same as Snapz Pro X. At $65, Screen Mimic is too expensive for people looking to either migrate from Snapz Pro X, or become first-time buyers of a screen-recording software utility.

Like I said, it took me a while to purchase Snapz Pro X, simply because I had to stomach the cost.

Why not make Screen Mimic half the price of Snapz Pro X? How about $30, to start? This lets current Snapz Pro X users try out something new, without emptying the wallet. Who knows - if Screen Mimic has a better product, it could steal users from Snapz Pro X.

If anything, some healthy competition is good for Snapz Pro X - who currently dominate the "Mac OS X screen recording software" niche.
