Using iTunes with Amazon S3 Jan25 '07

I'm transferring my entire iTunes music library to Amazon S3 servers. (Brief tutorial at Pain in the Tech.)

Why? For many reasons:

  1. It's no longer my concern to backup my music. I don't have to worry about disasters, hard drives failing, etc.
  2. I can access my music from anywhere in the world. We're talking almost 40 GB (and growing) of music that I can "tap into" no matter where I am at (provided there is an internet connection.)
  3. I have unlimited storage capacity.
  4. Internet speeds will only increase in the future, so streaming my music in such a manner will eventually be a non-issue.

Forget iPods and external hard drives. Those are so 2001-2010. (Is there an abbreviation for this decade, like 90's?)

Imagine a future where your car stereo, refrigerator, or treadmill can tap into the internet. Instead of carrying around a costly (and fragile) iPod - your music is universally accessible from a single source.

This is a step to prepare for such a future, and I believe I am already seeing the benefits.

Wherever I have my MacBook, I can open iTunes and listen to all of my music - music that is physically stored perhaps thousands of miles away.

The future is looking bright, indeed.
