Quick tip: lower the brightness in the evening Feb22 '07

When I work on my laptop in the evening, I always lower the brightness level to a very dull resonance, in order to keep my circadium rhythm on cycle.
Intense bright lights, like those emitted from a laptop screen, should be avoided in the evening hours. Bright lights send a signal to your brain that it's time to wake, not rest. Bright lights suppress the secretion of melatonin, which is a necessary hormone that induces sleep.
The darker your surroundings in the evening, the better.
Mac laptops make it very easy to adjust the brightness level. The "hot keys" are typically F1 and F2 - always just a keystroke away.
The effect on my laptop doesn't alter my workflow or focus - it is, in fact, quite relaxing and calming. The dull light is still enough to see what I am doing, but not enough to "shock" my eyes into an uncomfortable state.
In the morning, and during the day, I keep the brightness level high.
