Dealing with aggressive geese Mar30 '07
All around my workplace, we have geese flying to and from. They're often on the ground when I go outside to my car, or if I walk around the block, I see plenty of them sitting around, watching me with a leery eye.
I do not provoke them in any way, but rather go about my business and leave them alone. 95% of the time, I can walk directly next to them (within 5 feet), and they leave me alone.
However, on occasion, I'll be confronted with an aggressive goose, which exhibits the following characteristics:
- Approaching me fast.
- Opening and closing it's mouth, although no sound coming out.
- Flapping it's long wings up and down.
- Attempting to fly directly at my face.
These are typically the male geese, and they do this because there is a nest in the area.
"How convenient for them to nest in our parking lot," you are probably thinking.
In any case, if you are being attacked by a goose, it's important to not do what I've done many times, which was:
- Panic.
- Run away from the goose.
- Yell or sound frantic.
- Turn your back to the goose.
- Try to fight it by waving your arms in the air.
According to this article, it's crucial to do the following things, upon attack by a goose:
Maintain direct eye contact with the animal and face toward it.
If the goose acts aggressively calmly and slowly back away.
Maintain a neutral demeanor, do not act hostile or show fear.
Never turn you back to an aggressive goose.
If a goose flies toward your face duck and move at a right angle to the direction of flight while maintaining your front toward the goose.
These are great tips, and no longer will I be afraid to walk to my car after work.
