What "web 2.0" means (and doesn't mean) to me Apr25 '07
Jeremy mentioned to readers what he thinks "web 2.0" means, specifically in the context of a panel discussion.
"Web 2.0" is certainly not a new phrase, but I realized I have never posted about what "web 2.0" means to me.
So, here's a few things that immediately pop into my head:
- It's pages that "live and breathe," rather than simply "displaying content."
- It's the social aspect of things - but much more than MySpace comments and instant messages.
- It's a unique angle on an existing idea. (ie: uploading your photos is "web 1.0," but mashing your photos onto Google Maps using geotags is "web 2.0.")
- It's about replacing existing, redundant desktop applications with feature-rich, web-accessible solutions.
What I don't think "web 2.0" is (but others do):
- AJAX applications.
- Big, bold fonts.
- Stamping your product with a "Beta" label.
To me, these things are all cosmetic, and are not identifiable "web 2.0" characteristics. They are just the latest trends. They don't apply to the overall, deeper meaning of "web 2.0."
