Edit IPTC data before uploading to Flickr May15 '07

IPTC data is the textual data (metadata) stored with an image file, such as caption, headline, keywords, and categories.

Editing IPTC data means to annotate the image with further information.

Many image editors let you edit the IPTC data.

This information is useful for a couple of reasons:

For this tutorial, I will illustrate how to annotate images within GraphicConverter, and then upload the image to Flickr.

The same result can be achieved in other image-editing applications such as Adobe Photoshop.

Annotating images within GraphicConverter

With your image open in GraphicConverter, choose File > Edit File Info (IPTC):

Include as much information as necessary.

Save the image file.

Uploading to Flickr

When you upload this image to Flickr, your IPTC data will automatically be parsed by Flickr and used within the context of the image.

For example, headline will be used as the title of your image. Caption will be used as the description of your image:

This is especially handy if you are unable to access the internet (such as a remote vacation spot), and still would like to annotate your images locally.

Side note

Don't ask me what IPTC stands for, because I have no idea.
