Firefox search bar suggestions Jun02 '07

The built-in search bar for Firefox offers "suggestions," which are actual, "live" results, as you type.

This comes in handy quite often. Here are some examples of how I use this feature to save time.

Arithmetic

I typically use Google to perform basic arithmetic.

Using Google as a calculator saves me from having to open a separate calculator application, when I am already in the browser.

With Firefox search suggestions, you can save even more time.

As you type any equation into the search bar, a suggestion will appear that provides the answer. You don't even have to visit Google to accomplish this.

Definitions and spelling

Often I'll be thinking of words that I either forgot how to spell, or I am unsure of their meaning.

Typing "define", plus the first few characters of the word, will immediately provide me with spelling suggestions.

Then, if I want the full definition, I submit the search by hitting Enter, which then brings me to the search results (in this case: definitions).
