The next killer internet app? Hardly... Jun13 '07
After reading some of this, I could feel myself agreeing with the author:
I’ve been harsh on them because of this, going as far as to say I’d be leaving .Mac this year if the new OS didn’t bring some significant improvements.
That is until I read this:
Apple may have just created the next internet killer app.
Could my last post on the topic be resolved? Should I go ahead and renew?
In case you missed it, the next iteration of the OS includes the ability to search for files across every machine you own, regardless of it's location.
Sounds intriguing, but then I started thinking this feature (to search for files across every machine you own) is somewhat pointless. I already use online storage to backup and store my files. On all of the computers I own, there are no files on them. Locally, that is.
My files reside on servers throughout the country. So what benefit is there to be able to connect to every machine I own? Not much, it seems.
It makes other web based storage solutions seem rather silly because you aren’t limited by the storage they give you, but only limited by the storage you already have on your own computers.
Isn't this backwards thinking?
- Why would I want my files stored on multiple computers?
- To retrieve my files, I have to connect to multiple sources.
- You're still limited by the storage on your own computers.
This seems completely redundant to me. If your files are stored on multiple computers - computers that possibly aren't backed up, and may be susceptible to damage - tell me again, how is this better?
With regular online storage, such as Box.net, you're files reside in one location, and are still accessible from anywhere.
There - problem already solved.
