Why not include a real-time "Away" message so email senders know when you will read and reply to their message?

Matt, I think what you're calling for is more-or-less what Yahoo or GMail (even Apple) provide in terms of being able to update "status" (this is designed for chat primarily, but it is visible on messages and address book listings). In an ideal world, people would stick relevant messages here, like "At the office, expect a reply after 7" rather than a Journey song lyric and a smiley face. The trouble here, of course, is that the people emailing you have to be using the same service to see your status, because these web apps traditionally have had an aversion to communicating with one another..
And yeah, I would maim someone who sent me auto-responder messages constantly. :)
