Songza for instant song cravings Nov27 '07

I had the opportunity to meet the mind behind Songza (Chicago-based) at a recent Tech Cocktail event. Unfortunately I didn't ask any good questions besides what the application was built with (PHP, in case you're wondering).

After playing with Songza for a while, and discovering exactly how it can be useful, I wish I could have that meeting opportunity again, so this time I could ask the right questions.

It appears Songza simply scours the web for recordings based on your search. (Maybe it's just scouring YouTube, I don't know.) It doesn't guarantee quality or sanctity. The song file could be a weak 56 kbps, or simply not a song at all, but still named as such.

Still, the premise of being able to instantly play almost any song in the world is quite alluring, and fits best in such instances where you have a song stuck in your head, which you'd like to hear immediately.

Sometimes, however, you don't know the song name or artist, and perhaps you only have a few lyrics. Songza won't help you out there.

Another nice feature is being able to share a song with a permanent URL, which I think Last.fm already allows.

A nice feature of Songza is the ability to create a playlist with selected tracks. This way you can pick the songs you want to hear, press play, then focus your mind on something else while the music continues.
