Thoughts on Google Chrome Sep07 '08

I don't think Google is positioning Chrome as a game-changer. They're not (at least not right away) trying to compete with IE or Firefox. They're just doing it because they can. They obviously have the man-power to create something like this, so why not?

If it turns out to be more popular that what's already out there, then great. If not, no skin off their back. It would end up like a Talk or Checkout, or any other Google product that people initially thought would "change the game," but have just ended up being mediocre alternatives to what's already out there.

Google's main focus is obviously search. Everything else is just boutique products and services often started during 20% time. Google never intends for these products to immediately smash the market share of competitors.

They prefer to slowly integrate themselves into people's lives.

I've tried Chrome a couple times, and it kept crashing so clearly there's some work that still needs to be done.
