Eddie Vedder - "Someday We'll Go All The Way"

September 18, 2008 / Filed under: Lyrics, Music, Sports, Inspiration

I was informed of a song performed by Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam frontman) while he was in Chicago recently. The song has to do with the Cubs, and it's called, "Someday We'll Go All The Way."

As soon as I heard the title, I knew it would be a classic Vedder piece. I've always known he was a Cubs fan, and to combine his deep vocals and feel-good strumming with a Cubs theme (a more hopeful, "our day will come" theme), I knew it would be a wonderful listen.

Sure enough, I couldn't hold back some tears from forming, especially with the season the Cubs are having, and how close it all seems to actually happening.

The song sounds great in a live setting, with the crowd chanting during the refrain. Sounds very Irish, but maybe that was intentional?

You can download the song at the Pearl Jam web site.

Here's the lyrics, to the best of my hearing. I've included my own comments in some spots (that are crossed-out) where I think the lyrics should be changed.

It's kind of long, but worth it if you're a Cubs fan. Easy to relate.

Don't let anyone say that it's just a game.
For I've seen other teams and it's never the same.
When you're born in Chicago, you're blessed and you're healed.
First time (every time!) you walk into Wrigley Field.

Our hero's wear pinstripes; hero's in blue.
They give us the chance to feel like hero's too.
Whether we'll win, and if we should lose,

We know someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah! Someday we'll go all the way.

We are one with the Cubs, with the Cubs we're in love.
Yeah hold our head high as the underdog.
We are not fair weather but foul weather fans!
We're like brothers in arms in the streets and the stands.

There's magic in the ivy and the old scoreboard.
The same one I stared at as a kid keeping score.
A world full of greed I could never want more.

Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah! Someday we'll go all the way.

[Instrumental bridge]

And here's to the men and the legends we've known.
Teaching us faith and giving us hope.
United we stand and united we'll fall
Down to our knees the day we win it all.

Yeah Ernie Banks said, "Oh let's play two."
Or did he mean 200 years?
In the same ballpark, our diamond, our jewel.
The home of our joy and our tears.

Keeping traditions and wishes made new.
The place where our grandfathers' fathers they grew.
A spiritual feeling if I ever knew.
And if you ain't been I am sorry for you.

And when the day comes, when that last winning run,
And I'm crying and covered in beer.
I'll look to the sky and know I was right.

To think someday we'll go all the way,
Yeah! Someday we'll go all the way.

This song, I think, captures the true feeling of what it means to be a real Cubs fan in Chicago. More so than "Go Cubs Go," more so than "Hey Hey, Holy Mackerel," and more than any other Cubs song I have heard. As the story goes, this song was written as a birthday present to Ernie Banks, but to everyone who has ever thought of Wrigley Field as their church, this ong is really to all of us!

it's not "fall weather" fans...it's FOUL weather fans. As in, even though they've stunk up the joint plenty of times, we've never lost hope.

Here's to the day when I'm crying and covered in beer.

Die hard Cub fan and Pearl Jam fan. This song is the reason why I love the both of them. Eddie puts together the storied tradition of this great franchise and he sings what will one day happen! Let's hope this year is finally the year! Go Cubs

It's a "world full of green" not a "world full of greed." At least I'm pretty sure.

I downloaded the song and googled the lyrics and this is sentimental and cliched. Kind of boring, actually. Ernie Banks is a class act. He deserved to win a title. I ave a feeling the 2008 Cubs will find a creative way to fail.

This the best Cubs anthem I've ever heard! I cannot wait for the clinching game of the world series when the words can be changed to "Today we went all the way!" WHENEVER IT HAPPENS! Go Cubbies

# Rebecca at 9/24/2008 3:23 pm cst

Isn't is "Fall Weather Fans"?

# Brandon Wedeking at 9/24/2008 3:36 pm cst

The saddest thing here is that it takes the cubs to be doing well before this song gets any acknowledgement. I heard this over a year ago. What about "fair weather"?

# Miguel Sanchez at 9/25/2008 9:18 am cst

I wanted to point out to poster #15 that although Eddie Vedder has been performing this song live for over a year, a recording of this song was not released until September 18, 2008, 6 days before your post. You think maybe that's why the song didn't get any acknowledgement until quite recently?

# Dave M. at 9/27/2008 5:08 pm cst

Far weather fans....as in we will go all the way... someday

# Cubbie at 10/1/2008 10:13 am cst

Might it be "Foul" weather fans?

# Argyjr at 10/3/2008 11:16 am cst

I'm not a huge Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder fan, but I really dig this song! Go Cubs!
