Create New Google Doc bookmark

February 3, 2009 / Filed under: Google, Bookmarks, Firefox

Creating a new Google Doc is something I do almost a dozen times per day. The standard approach to creating a new doc goes like this:

  1. Open docs.google.com
  2. Click New, Document

It gets a little tedious having to do this each time.

We can eliminate these two steps by creating a "New Google Doc" bookmark, using this URL:

https://docs.google.com/MiscCommands?command=newdoc&redirectToDocument=true&hl=en_GB

(Note: This only seems to work for standard Google Docs, not Google Apps for your Domain.)

In Firefox, go to Bookmarks, Organize Bookmarks: Screenshot of Firefox

In the left pane, right-click Bookmarks Toolbar or Bookmarks Menu, then choose ** New Bookmark**:

Name it whatever you'd like, and include the full URL as the Location:

https://docs.google.com/MiscCommands?command=newdoc&redirectToDocument=true&hl=en_GB

Now you just need to click the bookmark once, and a new doc will open up for you!

You can use the same technique with Google apps for your domain with the following link:

https://docs.google.com/a/<YourDomain>/MiscCommands?command=newdoc&redirectToDocument=true&hl=en_GB

by replacing

<YourDomain>

with the domain you use for apps.
